There are very few pieces of furniture that have survived nearly a century of changing tastes and still feel completely at home in a contemporary London apartment, a minimalist Berlin loft, or a grand Madrid townhouse. The Barcelona chair with ottoman is one of them. Designed in 1929 by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe for the German Pavilion at the International Exposition in Barcelona, this chair was never meant to be ordinary. It was conceived as a throne for royalty, a seat of quiet authority, and it carries that energy into every room it enters today.
At Interior Furnishes, our Barcelona pavilion chair set is crafted to honour that original vision without compromise. The frame is constructed from solid stainless steel, hand-ground and hand-buffed to a mirror finish that catches light the way polished chrome should. The cushions are upholstered in genuine Italian real leather on the front faces, with matching artificial leather on the sides and back, and filled with premium fire-retardant high-resilience urethane foam that holds its shape through years of daily use. Whether you are furnishing a reception in Edinburgh, a living room in Amsterdam, or a boutique hotel lobby in Rome, this set delivers the kind of presence that no budget replica can replicate. Known in French as chaise Barcelone avec repose-pieds, in German as Barcelona Stuhl mit Hocker, in Spanish as silla Barcelona con reposapiés, in Italian as sedia Barcelona con poggiapiedi, and in Dutch as Barcelona stoel met voetenbank, this icon speaks every design language fluently.
The cushions on our Barcelona chair set are upholstered in genuine Italian leather on all visible surfaces. This is not bonded leather, not PU, and not a vague reference to leather-look fabric. Real leather develops a natural patina over time, softening and deepening in character the longer it is used. The grain is consistent, the hand-feel is supple, and the stitching is executed with precision along every seam. Buyers in Glasgow, Bristol, and Copenhagen who have lived with this chair for several years consistently report that the leather only improves with age. The back and side panels use a high-quality artificial leather that is colour-matched to the front, ensuring a seamless visual finish from every angle.
The frame is the structural and visual backbone of the Barcelona chair. Ours is fabricated from solid stainless steel, not hollow tubing, and each piece is hand-ground through multiple stages before being hand-buffed to a mirror finish. This process takes considerably longer than machine polishing, but the result is a surface that is genuinely reflective, free of micro-scratches, and resistant to tarnishing over time. The leather straps that support the cushions are made from reinforced artificial leather and are riveted directly to the frame, replicating the construction method of the original. Customers in Liverpool, Sheffield, and Stockholm have noted that the frame remains pristine even after years of use in high-traffic areas.
Our Barcelona chair with ottoman matches the original Mies van der Rohe dimensions precisely. The chair measures 75 cm wide, 76 cm deep, and 77 cm tall, with a seat height of 43.5 cm that positions the sitter at a natural, comfortable angle. The frame thickness is exactly 12 mm, and the back cushion height aligns flush with the top of the frame, both hallmarks of an authentic reproduction. The ottoman is proportioned to complement the chair perfectly, providing full leg support without disrupting the visual balance of the set. Total weight of the set is approximately 28 kg, reflecting the use of solid steel rather than lightweight alternatives.

The Barcelona chair set is one of the most versatile pieces in the modernist canon, and its ability to anchor a space without overwhelming it is what makes it so enduring. In a residential living room in Leeds or Cardiff, a single chair and ottoman in cream or white leather creates an immediate focal point against a neutral wall, drawing the eye without demanding attention. In a home office in Birmingham or Bristol, the black leather version communicates authority and focus, the kind of environment where serious work gets done. Architects and interior designers across Paris, Brussels, and Vienna regularly specify this chair for hotel lobbies, private members clubs, and corporate reception areas because it reads as both welcoming and refined. If you are building a curated seating arrangement, our premium lounge chair collection offers complementary pieces that pair naturally with the Barcelona set, and our full Barcelona chair range includes standalone chairs, sets, and alternative configurations for every spatial requirement.
Colour is not a cosmetic decision when it comes to the Barcelona chair. The leather you choose will define the mood of the room, the way light moves across the cushions, and the emotional register of the space. Here is a considered guide to each option available in this set.
Imagine walking into a room where everything is calm, considered, and quietly confident. That is what the white leather Barcelona chair with ottoman delivers. White leather against a dark floor or a charcoal wall creates a contrast that feels deliberate and sophisticated. It is particularly popular in Scandinavian-influenced interiors in Copenhagen, Stockholm, and Dublin, where the emphasis is on light, space, and restraint. White leather requires slightly more care than darker tones, but the visual payoff is exceptional.
Cream sits between white and tan in the warmth spectrum, and it is arguably the most universally flattering option in this collection. It works in traditional interiors in Edinburgh and Glasgow as naturally as it does in contemporary apartments in Lisbon and Prague. The cream leather Barcelona chair and ottoman has a softness that white cannot quite achieve, making it the preferred choice for residential living rooms where comfort and elegance need to coexist.
The black leather Barcelona chair with ottoman is the definitive choice for those who want the chair to make a statement without relying on colour. Black leather against a white or concrete wall is a combination that has appeared in design publications from Dezeen to Wallpaper Magazine for decades, and for good reason. It is the version most frequently specified for commercial environments in London, Manchester, and Berlin, where the chair needs to hold its own in a busy visual landscape. The mirror-finish steel frame is particularly striking against black leather, creating a contrast between warmth and precision that is hard to achieve with any other material combination.
These two earth tones share a common design logic: both bring warmth, depth, and a sense of organic richness to a space. The tan brown Barcelona chair with ottoman is lighter and more versatile, working well in rooms with natural wood floors, linen curtains, and warm ambient lighting. The chocolate brown Barcelona chair and ottoman is richer and more dramatic, suited to darker interiors in Madrid, Budapest, and Warsaw where the chair is intended to be the centrepiece of the room. Both tones age beautifully in real leather, developing a patina that only improves over time.
The red leather Barcelona chair with ottoman is for those who understand that restraint is a choice, not a default. A single red Barcelona chair in an otherwise neutral room is one of the most powerful design moves available to an interior designer, and it has been used to extraordinary effect in spaces from Amsterdam to Rome. Red leather against the mirror-finish steel frame is a combination that references the original spirit of the 1929 design, where the chair was intended to be seen, admired, and remembered. It is bold, it is confident, and it is entirely appropriate for anyone who wants their furniture to reflect their personality.
The Barcelona chair with ottoman arrives in a single large L-shaped box. The stainless steel frame is a one-piece construction, meaning there is no frame assembly required. It is wrapped in thick bubble wrap to protect the mirror finish during transit. The cushions are individually wrapped and packed in the same box, and they attach to the frame using the riveted leather straps with simple, clear instructions included. Most customers in Manchester, Leeds, and Sheffield report that the full unboxing and setup process takes under fifteen minutes. The ottoman is similarly straightforward, arriving pre-assembled and requiring only the attachment of its cushion.
