Charles: 17th June 1907 – 21st August 1978. Ray: 15th December 1912 – 21st August 1988

Charles and Ray Eames are considered to be two of the most famous and highly-respected designers of the 20th century.

They changed the definition of the “mid century modern” furniture style, with their organic, innovative designs which further extended their influence to architecture, exhibition design, photography, film-making, and production.

The groundwork for their unique and highly influential design style was being laid by both of them, even before they met. Charles modern views and deep interest in contemporary architecture led him to be kicked out of architecture course in Washington University while Ray was busy with Hans Hofmann and was studying painting.

Charles and Ray set a small workshop in the spare room of their rented apartment following their fascination with materials. In the workshop, they installed a machine referred to as “Kazam!”

Together they created a prototype of a moulded plywood leg-splint in their workshop. The materials like wood and glue for rocking chairs was smuggled by Charles from his job at MGM as a set architect.

Luck took a turn when they got an order for 5,000 splints form the U.S. Navy and they had to move their workshop form the spare room into some rental offices.

After which luck really sprinkled pixy dust over these two when their close friend Harry Bertoia, who at that time was the head of design at Herman Miller, helped them and manufactured the Eames' Moulded Plywood Chair by convincing his employers. This proved to be one of the best decision as it has been called "the chair of the century" since.

Then there was the Case Study House #8, one of most influential post-war residences internationally, and exhibition designed for IBM in 1961 “Mathematica: a world of numbers... and beyond.”, it's still going strong today, and is considered the model for all popular science exhibitions.

In over 80 short films, they managed to find the time to fit in their designs, some of which are worth observing as their furniture, architecture and exhibition designs. One of such examples is "The Power of Ten".

According to mass analysis, people crown the Eames Lounger and Ottoman which was deisgned in 1958 to be the glory of Charles' and Rays' career. For the next two centuries, no CEO's office was fully furnished without this pinnacle of premium opulence and it has since remained and maintained its standard of being the mark of chic domestic residences around the globe.

In every single one of the furniture designs, the love of materials and technical ingenuity of Eames' shows brilliantly. In addition to these, their will power to spend years in making the perfect design really carves out the best piece. Many of the examples in this regard can be seen like Eames Lounge Chair, Eames style dining chair, Eames style rocking chair, and more.

It may take some time for the genius mind to craft the ideas in air and shape them through materials but no wonder the processed product turns out to be one of a kind.
